In each of Charles Gibson's portrayals of the "Gibson Girl" in his pen-and-ink drawings, he emphasizes the wide bredth and unlimited capabilities of the 19th and 20th-century woman: the female athlete competing against males in a game of football in The Coming Game: Yale versus Vassar, Gibson Girls looking down at and analyzing the much smaller male specimen through a microscope in The Weaker Sex, etc.
